It is possible that these two stories are more connected than they seem. I am humble about my own ability to predict election results, but I start with a strong hunch that Mr Sanders would lose in a match-up with President Donald Trump, no matter what the head-to-head polling currently says. One thing that could tip the odds in the Vermont senator’s favour would be if America’s economy were to go into recession before November. That does not seem likely now. But there has to be some small chance of coronavirus spreading sufficiently fast, and causing enough panic, to cause a slowdown in America.
Let’s hope that does not happen. Yet if a screenwriter were put in charge of writing the plot for a Netflix series called “Election 2020”, it would be hard to come up with something more outlandish for the final episode than a socialist entering the White House because a virus that originated at a wildlife market in Hubei province had caused a recession half a world away. That such a scenario seems so improbable somehow also means it fits the times.
Whether Mr Sanders is a democratic socialist, a social democrat or something else entirely has been the subject of a lot of debate within The Economist over the past few weeks. The senator’s supporters often say that his inspiration is the Nordic countries, rather than one of the many failed socialist utopias. Yet talking to colleagues who write about the Nordics as they are now, it seems Mr Sanders is out of date. Denmark and Sweden in particular have transformed the relationship between companies and the state since the 1990s. Their famous wealth taxes have been reduced, as has state intervention in employment law and in the operation of companies.
The guiding philosophy of the Nordics now is that companies should be regulated but then left alone to generate wealth, which can then be taxed in order to fund a robust safety net. The kind of social democracy Mr Sanders favours—which includes taking 20% of the equity of companies and handing it to workers, or making the government an employer of last resort for those unable to find work—does not exist in the Nordic countries. <div style="font-family:MiloTE, MiloTESec, Charter, Bitstream Charter, Iowan Old Style, Calisto MT, serif;font-size:18px;line-height:1.39;text-align:left;color:#000000;"><p>We have two cover stories this week: in North America the cover is on <a href="https://www.economist.com/leaders/2020/02/27/bernie-sanders-nominee">Bernie Sanders,</a> the Democratic Party’s possible nominee, while the rest of the world has <a href="https://www.economist.com/leaders/2020/02/27/the-virus-is-coming">coronavirus</a> (literally).</p>
<p>It is possible that these two stories are more connected than they seem. I am humble about my own ability to predict election results, but I start with a strong hunch that Mr Sanders would lose in a match-up with President Donald Trump, no matter what the head-to-head polling currently says. One thing that could tip the odds in the Vermont senator’s favour would be if America’s economy were to go into recession before November. That does not seem likely now. But there has to be some small chance of coronavirus spreading sufficiently fast, and causing enough panic, to cause a slowdown in America.</p>
<p>Let’s hope that does not happen. Yet if a screenwriter were put in charge of writing the plot for a Netflix series called “Election 2020”, it would be hard to come up with something more outlandish for the final episode than a socialist entering the White House because a virus that originated at a wildlife market in Hubei province had caused a recession half a world away. That such a scenario seems so improbable somehow also means it fits the times.</p>
<p>Whether Mr Sanders is a democratic socialist, a social democrat or something else entirely has been the subject of a lot of debate within <i>The Economist</i> over the past few weeks. The senator’s supporters often say that his inspiration is the Nordic countries, rather than one of the many failed socialist utopias. Yet talking to colleagues who write about the Nordics as they are now, it seems Mr Sanders is out of date. Denmark and Sweden in particular have transformed the relationship between companies and the state since the 1990s. Their famous wealth taxes have been reduced, as has state intervention in employment law and in the operation of companies.</p>
<p>The guiding philosophy of the Nordics now is that companies should be regulated but then left alone to generate wealth, which can then be taxed in order to fund a robust safety net. The kind of social democracy Mr Sanders favours—which includes taking 20% of the equity of companies and handing it to workers, or making the government an employer of last resort for those unable to find work—does not exist in the Nordic countries.
